Google is integrating its two largest areas—advertising and search—enhanced by AI. The company is now displaying ads within AI-generated overviews for relevant searches, effectively connecting users with businesses and products directly within these summaries.

 

AI Overviews in Search are concise summaries of user questions, designed to provide quick answers that help users navigate online information efficiently. Until now, Google had not included ads in these summaries, a practice it has long employed in traditional search results.

 

“Sometimes you want a quick answer but lack the time to sift through all the information,” Google explained.

 

“At Google Marketing Live, we demonstrated how Search and Shopping ads would appear directly within AI Overviews when they align with both the query and response,” the company added.

Google states that the new ad format aims to “help people discover new brands and make informed purchasing decisions.” These ads will still display the “Sponsored” label prominently.

 

According to Google spokesperson Craig Ewer, ads will only appear in responses if a question has a “commercial angle.”

 

For example, if you ask Google how to remove a grass stain from jeans, AI Overviews will provide various solutions, from household products to commercial stain removers. In this context, relevant Shopping ads will appear within the overview, enabling you to quickly find the best stain remover.

 

“After several months of careful testing, we’re excited to announce that Ads in AI Overviews are now available for mobile users in the US,” Google said.
